Sunset at Balus Bay, Crete

There is a land called Crete in the midst of the wine-dark sea, a fair land and a rich, begirt with water, and therein are many men innumerable, and ninety cities.

We, who are dying, are doing better, than they, who will live. For Crete doesn’t need householders, she needs madmen like us. These madmen make Crete immortal.

My love is like a waterfall…..

When trekking in the Yorkshire Dales, England, on a rainy day back in 2000, I met these beautiful lovers hiding behind the Thornton Force waterfall. They only had eyes for each other and ignored me, standing calf-deep in the cold stream behind my tripod.
I am wondering if they ever left the hide 🙂

Iceland – the Land of Fire and Ice

When thinking about some words to accompany my photographs from Iceland, I realized that all has been said before by Stephen Markley in his excellent “Tales of Iceland or Running with the Huldufólk in the Permanent Daylight”:

“The problem with driving around Iceland is that you’re basically confronted by a new soul-enriching, breath-taking, life-affirming natural sight every five goddamn minutes. It’s totally exhausting.” A really good read!

“That we leave our homes, that we step through our doors to the world, that we travel our whole lives not because we want to collect exotic T-shirts, not because we want to consume foreign adventure the same Western way we consume plastic and Styrofoam and LCD TVs and iPads, but because it has the power to renew us—not the guarantee, not the promise, just the possibility. Because there are places our imaginations can never construct for us, and there are people who we will never meet but we could and we might. It reminds us that there is always reason to begin again.”

Venice Carnival

The famous Venice Carnival is coming soon, so I thought I might feed you some inspiration for your travel photography. The below images were taken in 2004 – in the old days of analog cameras and film rolls. Back then, I was heavily using my trusty, all-manual, Nikon FM2n and Fuji Velvia films – so do not expect any EXIF data this time 🙂

And do not forget to keep your eyes open! It is not only about people wearing masks; there is much more to see and photograph in the beautiful city of Venice and neighboring islands!

If you plan to visit the festival in 2016, here is some travel information on telegraph.co.uk.
